Doing countdown activities, help little ones wrap their heads around the concept of time. They're also a quick, easy and fun way to practice numbers, as well as counting backwards. Here's a cat craftivity that's a great review of all sorts of standards, and is purr-fect for your Pete the Cat theme. There are 4 different cats to choose from. You can run them off on blue construction paper (for a Pete the Cat one) and have students trim, or run them off on white construction paper and have students color their cat.
Run these off on the appropriate colors; laminate and trim. Use these as flashcards, a pattern block bulletin board, or give the giant pattern block pieces to students to use with, or as an alternative to, the wooden pattern blocks.
The hexagon is often a "toughie" shape for students to learn. A fun way to give them more practice with hexagons, is with pattern blocks. Have them count them, stack them, pattern with them etc. As they are playing with the pattern blocks, challenge them to use the variousl pieces to see how many ways they can make the hexagon shape.
Don't just have your students play with pattern blocks; have them learn the shape names of the pieces. Includes full color set of pocket cards, plus a black & white, pattern-block booklet that students can make. They trace, draw and color the shape, plus trace and write the shape word.
