I think photographs really add to a lesson, as it's always amazing to me how many of my little "punkins" have never been to a pumpkin patch to pick out their pumpkin, or are even aware of the fact that pumpkins, like apples, come in more than one color.

On the front of the paper plate, students draw a Jack-o'-lantern.  My kiddos absolutely LOVE doing this craftivity, and the results, suspended from the ceiling in the hall, are simply "spook-tacular!"

We get lots of "ooh ahh" comments too. life cycle of a pumpkin, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin life cycle, pumpkin emergent reader,

1-2-3 Come Do A Few Pumpkin Craftivities With Me

Now that October is nearing an end and your students have hopefully read a zillion fall books, or you've read them during story time, have children choose their favorite fall book and do one or more of the craftivities in this Common Core Pumpkin packet, which covers a lot of reading and writing standards.  Woo Hoo!

pumpkin book report, creative book reports, pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, common core pumpkins, venn diagram activities, beginning middle end activities, story element activities, retelling a story activities, The packet includes:

A pumpkin book report craftivity.

"Read it" is a play on words for "Ribbit" so I've also included a little frog template that you can run off.

Students color, trim and glue the frog to their pumpkin.  There's also a blank pumpkin template without the words "Read it"

Students can leave the pumpkin plain, or draw on a face to make a Jack-O-Lantern, especially if they're writing about a Halloween book.

Run off the "pumpkin guts" writing prompt section on yellow paper. Students  fill in with information about their favorite book.

Add some finishing touches with crayons and a school photo glued to the stem.

pumpkin book report, creative book reports, pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, common core pumpkins, venn diagram activities, beginning middle end activities, story element activities, retelling a story activities, The packet also includes another writing activity without a craft.

Older  students write about two of their favorite fall books on the recording sheet.

pumpkin book report, creative book reports, pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, common core pumpkins, venn diagram activities, beginning middle end activities, story element activities, retelling a story activities, If you want them to compare and constrast the books they've chosen, they can fill out the Venn diagram to help organize their thoughts.

The beginning-middle-end story pumpkin craftivity, will be a fun way for them to share their thoughts.

As with the other craft, I've also included a blank pumpkin pattern, so students can draw on their own face.  Run off the template of your choice on orange construction paper.

Students place the orange pumpkin paper on the top of a yellow sheet of construction paper and cut once, creating the inside of their page at the same time that they cut out their pumpkin cover.

pumpkin book report, creative book reports, pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, common core pumpkins, venn diagram activities, beginning middle end activities, story element activities, retelling a story activities, Children glue or staple their booklet together. (I've provided a nice wide tab on the left side.)  Cutting on the dashed lines of the orange paper, students create a flip booklet to explain the beginning, middle and end of their story.

I've included samples of both projects, so you can quickly and easily make your own examples to share with your students.

Any of the activities work well for your Daily 5, and are especially fun for Halloween party day.  Let's face it, most children are so energized that day, that it's nice to have something a bit out of the ordinary, to grab their attention and keep them focused, while still learning something relevant.

A nice bonus about the pumpkin craftivities without Jack-O-Lantern faces, is that you can keep these displays up through Thanksgiving, with the rest of your November harvest things.

1-2-3 Come Make A Pumpkin Writing Prompt Craftivity With Me

With all of the pros and cons about Halloween and the hype about the negative versus the positive aspects of the holiday, I thought this controversy would make an interesting October writing prompt that even younger students could manage. This would be great for your writing block or Daily 5 writing portion on Halloween day, which tends to be a bit crazy.

Halloween writing prompts, writing prompts for October, halloween crafts, halloween activities, positive negative art, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activitiesAs a whole group, brainstorm what things students like about Halloween and list them on the board.  Then discuss the negative aspects of the holiday and things that they don't like about Halloween.  Write those on the board as well.

The lists can help students with spelling, as well as deciding what things they want to include in their own writing prompt.

I've always been intriqued by the positive negative aspects of art, and the fun things you can create around that concept.

Halloween writing prompts, writing prompts for October, halloween crafts, halloween activities, positive negative art, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activitiesWith that in mind, I thought the perfect craft to use as a topper for this writing prompt, would be a positive negative pumpkin.   Click on the link to grab your FREEBIE.

Here's how to make one:

Halloween writing prompts, writing prompts for October, halloween crafts, halloween activities, positive negative art, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activitiesRun the pumpkin template off on orange construction paper. I've put two pumpkins on a page for qucik printing, so you'll need to cut them in half using a paper cutter.

Likewise, cut black construction paper in half as well.  Students lay their 1/2 sheet of black construction paper underneath their orange paper pumpkin half, and then cut out 2 pumpkin halves at the same time.  One will be orange; the other black.

When they are done, they glue a half sheet of black construction paper onto a whole sheet of orange construction paper.

Halloween writing prompts, writing prompts for October, halloween crafts, halloween activities, positive negative art, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activitiesNow glue the orange pumpkin on top of the black construction paper side, and the black pumpkin on the orange construction paper side, so that the two pumpkins are joined together, making a positive and negative pumpkin picture.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Crimping With Me

Crimping? What's crimping? It's a wonderful way to add that finishing touch to your students' crafts. Alicia, over at Jam Paper, contacted me and asked if I would be willing to design some sort of craft activity using their paper.   Of course! (They have "every color and every size!" including brown which is rather unusual and perfect for fall.)

crimping tool crafts, pumpkin crafts, apple crafts, haunted house crafts, halloween crafts, scarecrow crafts, venn diagrams, venn friendsI checked out their site and found that they also carried an awesome tool called a "corru-gator"  which crimps paper!  Well the creative juices kicked in and my brain went into over drive, with all of the fun things I could do with one. The more I pondered, the more excited I got.  I hope you will too.

I chose the "wave" pattern for it's versatility. (One with straight lines, that crimps like corrugated cardboard, is also available.)  I'm sure scrapbookers are well aware of these fun gadgets, but I wanted to figure out ways a teacher could use one in the classroom.

One of the reasons that this is great for school, is that it has a width of 8 1/2 inches, so it will fit a regular sheet of paper, (smaller sizes too) as well as card stock thickness, so you can add texture to just about any project.

crimping tool crafts, pumpkin crafts, apple crafts, haunted house crafts, halloween crafts, scarecrow crafts, venn diagrams, venn friendsThe corru-gator is a safe and easy-to-use-tool even for little ones.  Inserting a sheet of paper and cranking the roller, is wonderful fine motor practice that is a super-fun way to strengthen finger muscles, which is so important for pre-writing skills and scissor cutting capability.

A child's excitement at seeing their finished project being cranked out, with a cool texured look, is priceless.  "Wow! Look what I made."

Because students will want to add that "finishing touch" to whatever you deem appropriate, use the tool as an incentive to keep students focussed, by allowing them to use the crimper after they have completed their project.

What kinds of projects? Oh the possibilities... Here are just a few that I thought of:

Students can crimp a file folder (portfolio) or pocket folder to keep their work in.  The "Flip For Facts" file folder activities that I've posted also look more interesting after they're crimped too.  Make sure you use plenty of glue on projects to be crimped and that they are completely dry.

crimping tool crafts, pumpkin crafts, apple crafts, haunted house crafts, halloween crafts, scarecrow crafts, name activities, name crafts, venn diagrams, venn friendsCrimp shapes, letters and numbers to add a bit of pizzazz. Use Elison die cut letters and have students glue them together to make a name plate then crimp it, or simply have them write and color their names and then add the texture.

When students make a special card for Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or Father's Day, allow them to crimp it to add that "wow" factor or have them crimp the envelope for something different.

Crimp your plain colored bulletin board borders to add some 3D pop.  Have students design a bookmark and then crimp it.

crimping tool crafts, fire safety crafts, pumpkin crafts, apple crafts, haunted house crafts, halloween crafts, scarecrow crafts, name activities, name crafts, venn diagrams, venn friendsCrimp a writing prompt topper, or even the written page.  I crimped the entire haunted house 5 senses craftivity to add an extra touch of creepy. As I've discussed before, tossing in a bit of hands-on art to go along with a writing prompt, simply gets students more motivated.

Crimping only takes a minute and the unusual results will surely get all sorts of comments.  Everyone wanted to know how we made these cool tri-colored apples.

A myriad of themed craft activities are also perfect for crimping.  Here are just a few:

For Fall: crimp apples, pumpkins, scarecrows, bats, spiders, candy corn, skeletons, & monsters.

I designed this fall dangler then added the texture for an interesting 3D effect.

Trees are also the perfect craft to crinkle.

For Groundhog Day, crimp children's groundhog craftivities to give those animals some "fur".  Are you studying shadows? Using a light source, trace your students' profile, trim and crimp.

For Valentine's Day add texture to paper hearts.  If you study Abraham Lincoln, crimp a log cabin.

Moving on to Spring: Crimp rain, the water cycle, a Seuss hat, butterflies, caterpillars, shamrocks, flowers, grass, eggs, baskets, bunnies, lions, and lambs.

As you can see I'm pretty excited about the educational potential of this fun gadget, and at $24.50 it's certainly an affordable tool to add to your teaching bag of tricks.

Speaking of envelopes, if you do a Chinese New Year Theme in February, and want to get some red coin envelopes to do a few of my Chinese New Year activities with, they sell the perfect 3 x 5.5 size.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Pumpkin Craftivities With Me

Quite a few of my most popular downloads are those that involve a hands-on craft.  With all of the standards we have to teach, I realize that many teachers don't feel that they have any time left in their day for the "fun" things they used to do.

With that in mind, I try to incorporate some standards in the crafts that I design, thus the name "craftivities".  pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activities, pumpkin writing prompts, common core pumpkins, life cycle of a pumpkin, pumpkin facts, pumpkin masks, pumpkin puppets, peekin in a pumpkin, kool aid pumpkinsI decided to featurA Baker's Dozen   of my all-time favorite pumpkin craftivities in this article, since the number 13 can certainly be associated with Halloween.  Although I've used the term a baker's dozen for years, I didn't know why it came about.  If you're curious too, click on the link.

Since Apple Sense was such a huge hit, I decided to make a Pumpkin Sense one.  This is a quick, easy and fun way to review the 5 senses, as well as work on the importance of adjectives in descriptive writing.

Having a carved class pumpkin isn't necessary, but really helps.  Adding a hand print leaf and photo adds that finishing touch.

Via a note home to parents, which is included in the packet,  you'll have the personal information needed to help your kiddo's make a personal pumpkin.

There are also family word cards that you can use in a pocket chart or for flashcards, plus several worksheets and a Tally Time activity with math extensions.

pumpkin crafts, pumpkin activities, pumpkin writing prompts, common core pumpkins, life cycle of a pumpkin, pumpkin facts, pumpkin masks, pumpkin puppets, peekin in a pumpkin, kool aid pumpkinsPumpkins In The News  reinforces the letter Pp, and has a variety of writing options as well. Students find and cut out shapes to make a pumpkin face, as well as letters that spell their name.  These will be used for the pumpkin's smile.  They can also search for all of the letter Pps on their pumpkin and circle them.

For writing practice, younger students trace and write the Pp is for pumpkin worksheet and glue it to the back of their pumpkin.  Brainstorm with older students of why pumpkins might be in the news.  They choose a topic and then write about it on the pumpkin template, trim and then glue to the back of their newsprint pumpkin

The "guts" of the pumpkin are on the other side.

I put a dollop of Elmer's glue with a bit of yellow paint in the middle and let my students swirl it around with a Q-tip, then glue bits of yarn and real pumpkin seeds on, for an awesome result.

You can review 2D shapes and have students draw a Jack-O-Lantern face on the back, or you can teach some pumpkin facts with the pumpkins ARE, HAVE, CAN writing prompt; (I've included a completed sample.) or you can explain the life cycle of a pumpkin, and have students color, trim and glue that circle to the back of their pumpkin bowl.

Curling ribbon and a child's hand print leaf add the finishing touches.  These look terrific suspended from the ceiling too.

One involves measurement activities, another investigates the inside and outside of a pumpkin and uses adjectives to record findings; while the last one involves writing about things that scare you.

This is a 3 dimensional pumpkin as students glue 3-4 paper circles together.

When I Googled the song, I found a sweet Popsicle stick puppet over at Teacher Mama.  Click on the link for a pattern and my version. Pumpkin Puppet.

This idea has been around for decades, but I just learned of it a few years ago when I met a crafty gal at Hobby Lobby.  I actually made these with my Y5's.  Their mommies were really impressed, as they turned out so cute.  They cost about $1 each to make.

This photo doesn't do justice to how absolutely awesome these turned out, as our pumpkins puffed up to over an inch high when they dried.

We also revisit this technique in January when we make snowmen.  Click on the link for the Puffy Pumpkin.  To see a photo of our snowmen click here. For some reason, you can see the puffiness much better in the snowman pictures.

1-2-3 Come Do Nine Fine Pumpkin On The Vine Math Activities With Me

I have so many fun pumpkin activities to share, that I thought I'd feature 9 of my favorites that I use to teach all sorts of math standards.

pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin math, pumpkin investigations, seed booklet, seed sorting, pumpkin games, telling time activities, digital and analog time activities, money activities, measurement activitiesA quick, easy and fun way to review numbers from 1-30, counting backwards from 20 or 10 to 0; plus skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's & 10's is with the pumpkin slider. There are 3 different pumpkin patterns for children to choose from.

So that you can also review upper & lowercase letters, I included those traceable strips as well.  Sliders are a great way to whole group assess as you play an "I Spy!" game.

They review analog and digital time to the hour as well as time to the half hour.   Make extra sets for students to play Memory Match or "I Have; Who Has?" games. I've included a tip list of other things you can do with the cards, plus a Kaboom game.

Several standards are covered in this easy-reader pumpkin coin booklet that reinforce coins and shapes.

Students trace and write the coin word, the value of the coin, plus the shape word.  They trace the shape and then draw it on the pumpkin; cutting and gluing the coin(s) to the matching numbered boxes.

Help students practice measurement, by using apples and pumpkins.

You can run this packet off as an entire booklet for each child to work on, or use one worksheet each day during your math or science time.

I have pages where students measure with blocks, and other worksheets where students measure with a real scale and a yardstick.  Click on the link for Pumpkin & Apple Measurement Activities

Students measure height, weight, width and circumference of a pumpkin. They trace and write vocabulary-building words, predict, answer questions, + collect and analyze data.

I think most teachers cover the life cycle of a pumpkin to add a bit of science into their day.

With that in mind, I designed From Seeds To Pumpkin Pie: a quick, easy and awesome looking life cycle of a pumpkin craftivity.  Ever mindful of standards, I included some shape & fraction fun to go with it.

pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin math, pumpkin investigations, seed booklet, seed sorting, pumpkin games, telling time activities, digital and analog time activities, money activities, measurement activitiesThe front of the pumpkin reviews all of the 2D basic shapes, including the hexagon, as students design their Jack-O-Lantern. (K.G.2)

The back of the pumpkin converts into a pie and is divided into quarters that show the pumpkin's life cycle. To make it look like a "real" pie tin, I covered a paper plate with aluminum foil.

Two fraction worksheets are included, to work on dividing circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares. Students describe the sections using the words halves, fourths & quarters. (1.G.3) Completed projects look terrific suspended from the ceiling.

pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin math, pumpkin investigations, seed booklet, seed sorting, pumpkin games, telling time activities, digital and analog time activities, money activities, measurement activitiesFinally, the Seed Sorting packet, helps you to continue with a bit more science, while covering all sorts of math standards:  Data collection & analysis, sorting, comparing & contrasting, predicting, guess-timating, counting, sequencing, greater than, less than & equal to, plus graphing.

You can do these activities as a whole group, or set things up as a center and have students work independently on their own seed worksheets.

pumpkin activities, pumpkin crafts, pumpkin math, pumpkin investigations, seed booklet, seed sorting, pumpkin games, telling time activities, digital and analog time activities, money activities, measurement activitiesThe easy reader My Seed Booklet, is a matching activity. You can simply make a booklet to share with your students, so that they can see the different kinds of popular fall seeds, or have each child make their own booklet by drawing the seeds.

Since you can buy packages of popcorn, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, you may want your students to glue some real ones to their booklet as well.  You can always use the leftovers for all sorts of counting and sorting activities.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Apple and Pumpkin Activities With Me!

One of the much-needed skills for little ones, is the ability to cut.  Just learning how to hold a scissors is quite an accomplishment for some.  To help my Y5's strengthen their hand muscles and increase dexterity, I incorporated cutting practice in some form or another every day.  To make this less tedious and frustrating, many of the activities revolved around creating a craft that included other skills as well.

To add a bit more pizzazz, older students can glue two different colors together.  The thicker paper lessens the drop of the spiral, and the double-sided colors add interest to the dangler.  Students glue a stem and leaf to the top.  Punch a hole; add a yarn loop and suspend from the ceiling, or as a border against a hallway wall.  Click on the link to view/download the A-peel-ing Apples activity.

These apple and pumpkin "strip" puzzles, will not only give your students practice with that skill, but review and reinforce sequencing numbers from 1-10, skip counting by 10's, or counting backwards from 10-1. I've used a dashed-line font, for the numbers on the apples and pumpkins, so that students can get some writing practice in.  Encourage children to count quietly as they trace the numbers.

Remind students to keep a small space between the strips.  Students add a stem and leaf to the top.  You can make the pumpkin more of a keepsake, by having children, or a room helper, trace their hand, with their fingers spread, onto green construction paper.  They trim and glue next to their stem.  Completed projects make a sweet harvest bulletin board.

You may want to laminate one of each kind, to keep in your math center.  Each puzzle has its own Baggie.  Children can work indepently, or pick a partner to play "Speed" against.  The first one who completes their puzzle, is the winner.  Click on the link to view/download the Apple and Pumpkin Number Puzzles.

Everything's Coming Up PUMPKINS!

I LOVE fall.  It was one of my favorite times of the year with my Y5’s.

We studied so much science in the month of October: leaves and how they changed color, because they lost their chlorophyll; pumpkins: their life cycle and if they sank or floated, when submerged in water; and spiders spinning their lovely webs.

Dreaming up all sorts of hands-on craftivities to teach these concepts, as well as incorporating a multitude of report card standards and subjects, was always a challenge that I enjoyed.

At the end of the month, when we graphed our favorites, pumpkins rolled into the top spot year after year. Nationwide teachers across the US, spend a lot of time in the pumpkin patch reading, writing and diddling with numbers, so I wanted to offer up a nice variety of activities.

It’s 23 pages and includes 6 pumpkin projects, that help reinforce report card skills and standards.

In 5 Little Pumpkins, I revamp an old-fashioned favorite and turn the rhyme into a Pumpkin Paper Plate Puppet Theater.

It’s a fun way to review ordinal numbers, counting, and rhyme.

I like using recycled “stuff” to make a “craftivity.”  Using newspapers for art paper provides a cool effect, when students use orange highlighters to color over the newsprint.

Newsprint Pumpkins are a unique way to review shapes and letters as well as name recognition and spelling. Have students circle all of the letter P’s that they can find for even more practice.

For even more fall fun, your little "punkins" can practice all sorts of skills and report cards standards in the 42 - page Pumpkin Art and Activities II packet.

Sing the ABC song,  practice counting and  verbal acuity, by identifying shapes, letters and numbers, with the pumpkin slider (pictured), just one of many pumpkin-themed activities in this part two packet.
