Many years ago, when I taught 1st grade, stuffed animals helped my students remember our reading strategies.  I had a basketful that they could choose from to read to as a reading buddy. 

I'd pick up inexpensive plush at garage sales, slit the bottoms and take out the stuffing. Wahla; instant puppet manipulative that could also assist in reminding students to "chunk with the skunk" or "stretch with the ostrich".  This packet also includes a bookmark.
