1-2-3 Come Do Some Apple Math With Me
I never mind putzing a bit to make a math center because once you’re done making your activities things are easy-peasy.
I designed this packet so students are empowered because they set up the center, do the activity independently, check their work via the answer-key posters, make corrections if needed, then put things back where they belong.
No more prep for you, so you’re freed up while children are happily engaged.
Plus you can reuse this “apple-icious” math center every year. Woo hoo!
I keep my apples with a pipe cleaner stem in a large ZipLock Baggie and have included labels so you can separate the 0-10 apples from the 11-20 ones.
I created the patterns in such a way that you can easily diversify your lessons, while practicing a variety of standards such as:
* Sequencing, patterning, number recognition, counting forwards & backwards, +1 addition, -1 subtraction, groups/sets, subitizing, sorting odd & even, number word recognition, plus greater & less than.
There are so many independent center options that I've included a list of suggestions.
For this math center students count and string that many beads on the pipe cleaner stem, which matches the appropriate numbers on the apple.
They can use all one color, or show me an AB-AB or ABC-ABC color pattern.
Children match the leaves and various centers to the appriate apple.
Even though I'm not teaching reading to my Y5s, I still put the number words on the leaves and apples.
They enjoy these games so much, that the continued repetition of seeing number words associated with a specific number, eventually sinks in by association, so many start reading those words on their own!
You can also use the patterns to make a set of apples without a pipe cleaner stem. I simply glued on a strip of brown paper.
To reinforce the fact that apples can be red, yellow and green, I make a set of each color.
Students can make matches with the apples, (great for "Memory Match" or "I Have; Who Has?" games) as well as showing a row of color patterns.
Children pick a number leaf, place it at the top then use black or brown pony beads to make a group of that many "seeds", which practices counting, making groups/sets, number recognition, plus one-to-one correspondence!
Call out a number. Using a dry erase marker, students write that number on their leaf, and make that many "seed" dots on the center oval, then place that many "seed beads" on the pipe cleaner stem.
When they are done, they hold their apple in the air. You can see at a glance who is having difficulty.
This is an inexpensive and easy enough craft, that students could also make their own apple, then take it home for continued practice there.

As with my other math centers, I keep each one of the puzzles in their own ZipLock Baggie. I hope your kiddos enjoy these apple strip puzzles as much as mine do.

1-2-3 Come Do An Apple Puzzle With Me
Do you study apples? If so, I think your kiddos will enjoy this quick, easy and super-fun apple game.
Play as an independent center, or as a whole group activity where children plck a partner.
The game will reinforce numbers 1-6 for PK kiddos, while older students can use the 1-12 number puzzle to practice addition.
There are several ways to play:
* Run off the 6-on-a-page pattern and trim.
* There are 3 different apple puzzles for #s 1-6, as well as 3 for #s 1-12.
* Students pick a partner or play in groups of 3, taking turns rolling the dice.
* Whatever number they roll they color in the matching section on their puzzle.
* Older students will play with one dice for numbers 1-6, then use two dice, adding them together, for numbers 7-12.
* To reinforce the fact that apples are 3 different colors, I have my students color with a red, yellow, and green crayon.
* You can give children a choice of how they want to color, or to practice “color by number” following directions, hang up the poster(s) for them to refer to.
* The first child to color in all of the numbers, or the one with the most filled in when the timer rings, is the winner.
To play this as a Center Game:
* Run off the larger apple puzzles on red, yellow and lime green construction paper, laminate and trim.
* Run off the same number of patterns on white card stock, so younger children have a base to place the puzzle pieces on.
* Challenge older students to try and figure out the puzzle without using the base template.
* Children play the same as above, only instead of coloring a section, they find, and place that puzzle piece over the correct number.
* To assist children who are not using a base, print & laminate the “Challenge!” sample posters for them to refer to.
* I’ve also included “header” cards, if you’d like to make these as an inexpensive gift for a back-to-school treat bag.
* They come in color as well as BW
It’s a super-simple, 1st day activity that children can do independently, which allows you to be freed up. Woo hoo!
Children are happily engaged putting their own personal puzzle together.
When they’re done, they pick a new friend to play the dice game with; using the base that they built their puzzle on, which they’ll now color for the “Roll & Color” dice game.
I’ve included a different “Welcome!” apple pattern for this, where the sections are a bit larger, so that you have room to write the letters of each child’s name if you want.
You can have these pre-cut, or to make the activity last longer have children cut out their own pieces.
Today's featured FREEBIE is an icebreaker activity perfect for the first day or week of school.
The M&M or Skittle Game has been around for a while, and goes by as many names as there are colors. There's also a variety of ways to play.
These are my versions. I hope you find them useful and an intersting and easy way to get to know your new students, as you build community and cameraderie.

I know that I said I was done designing apples for awhile, but I found a few more notes while cleaning off my desk, and one thing led to another, 'til 4 mini apple packets were knocked off. I hope you enjoy them. The desk is cleared and just waiting to be filled with all sorts of other fall fun . . . where to begin?
I always get a few requests for some worksheets that connect-the-dots for a variety of things. Raesha, from Arizona, wondered if I had any connect the dots with skip counted numbers.
She's reviewing skip counting by 5's and 10's with her firsties and thought these would be fun.
I chose an apple theme for my template and included numbers from 0-10, as well as numbers from 0-30, plus apples for skip counting by 5's and then 10's.
Since I had the template designed, I also made a connect the dots for uppercase letters and another for the lowercase letters. Click on the link to view/download the Apple Connect The Dots packet.
Another request came from Rachel, over in Wisconsin. She wanted a quick and easy way to whole-group assess a variety of standards, to see where her kinders are at.
My favorite way to whole-group assess is with an "I Spy!" game. I designed these with an apple theme. Students spy uppercase letters, lowercase letters, shapes, and numbers.
They trace the letter/shape/number called, and then raise their hand. You can see at a glance who is having difficulty.
Students enjoy this form of assessment, and you know where the majority of your students are, without a whole lot of time invested testing.
Another plus for these worksheet-games, is that students can take them home and use them several more times, as they play with their parents, continuing to reinforce standards in a fun way.

I continued to reinforce name recognition with my Y5's through October, and tried to think of a variety of ways for them to practice finding and writing their names. With a big apple unit in September, it seemed only fitting to do something with apples.
Print a copy of the apple name game template and then write your students' names on the inside.
I also include my own name, so that I had a sample to share and show, as I explained what I wanted my kiddos to do.
Every year some of my little ones were amazed that I had a first name (Diane). They simply thought of me as their teacher Mrs. Henderson.
I guess it was sort of like asking the question: "What's your mom's name?" To which most of them would reply: "Mommy." :-)
Students find and circle their name, write it on the bottom and then, because I was teaching them that apples came in three colors, I'd have them trace their apples with those 3 color markers or crayons. Completed projects make a cute bulletin board. ("The Apples Of Mrs. Henderson's Eyes!" )
I've also included an apple card template for you to use as name tags and/or games. Print a few copies of the apple card master; write your students's names on one set and then run off on yellow construction paper.
Print another set on white card stock and trim. Each child colors their own apple and then glues their photo in the middle. Collect, laminate and trim. Use the photo apple cards with the name apple cards, to play Memory Match or "I Have; Who Has?" games.
You could also put both sets of apple cards on a split ring and use them as flashcards, to help your students learn the names of their classmates, as well as how to read their names. Click on the link to view/download the Apple Name Game packet.
Finally, I made some apple puzzles, that make an easy and inexpensive little gift for the 1st week of school, or whenever.
I've included 3 different header cards for your treat Baggies, as well as a black and white template, so that your students can color their own puzzle.
When they are done, have them cut out their puzzle, mix up the pieces and challenge them to be the first one to complete their apple puzzle.

The last few articles have covered apple art, some apple science (apple facts and the apple life cycle) plus a bit of writing, so I thought it was time to throw in a little apple math. I've designed some numbered apples from 1 to 100. You can put them up all at once, or add one each day of school, as you count up to your 100th day celebration.
Another fun way to reinforce counting, is with Willie the Worm. His body is a numbered "slider". Children trace the numbers and then insert Willie into their apple. Call out a number, students slide the worm to that number.
This is a quick and easy way to whole group assess, as you can see at a glance who is having difficulty. I've also included strips for skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's, and 10's for a non-boring way to practice.
For just-the-right-size number fun, with an apple theme, click on the Apple Number packet. The packet includes: Smaller numbered apples (1-120) that students can easily sequence. Use these as anchor charts or a help poster for your students' math folders. The apple 1-120 individual strips, can be cut to form a number line.
I've included 16 "What's Missing?" activity sheets, that are especially helpful for those toughy teen numbers. Run them off for students to fill in, or laminate and have children place number tiles on empty spaces. The apple math symbols, allow students to use the apples to create and solve addition and subtraction equations, as well as show greater and less than.
Apples with numbers as well as number words, help with reading comprehension. Use them for games, pocket charts, or your word wall. Skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's is also included, plus 4 games, with the ability to create many more. Click on the link to get the 35-page comprehensive Apple Number packet.
For more addition and subtraction activities, you'll enjoy the apple-themed 10-frame packet.
If you teach little ones just learning to count, or ESL students, they'll enjoy the 1-to-1 correspondence apple game. I've included full-color cards, as well as black line masters if you want your kiddos to color their own.
I used red, yellow and green pony beads as manipulatives. This provides great fine motor practice as well.
Puzzles are also a fun way for students to practice sequencing numbers.
I've included an apple as well as a pumpkin shaped puzzle in this packet. Run the apples off on red, yellow and lime green construction paper; give students a choice of what color they want for their apple.
Children can simply put the puzzle together, or have them create an interesting mosaic picture, by gluing the pieces to a sheet of black construction paper. (Make sure they leave a little space inbetween the pieces.)
For that finishing touch, add their photo to the leaf. To make it more of a keepsake, have students trace their hand for the pumpkin leaf.
There are 7 more apple-themed puzzles in another packet. Use the skip counting by 10's puzzles for older students.
Finally, when doing apple math, one can't forget to include shapes as well as graphing. Both are accomplished in the Shapely Fall Graphs packet.

It's a rainy day, and although it's tempting to venture into some time-sucking fun on Pinterest, I'm off to higher priorities. (Perhaps curling up with a good book!) Wishing you an apple-icious afternoon.
1-2-3 Come Do Some Apple and Pumpkin Activities With Me!
One of the much-needed skills for little ones, is the ability to cut. Just learning how to hold a scissors is quite an accomplishment for some. To help my Y5's strengthen their hand muscles and increase dexterity, I incorporated cutting practice in some form or another every day. To make this less tedious and frustrating, many of the activities revolved around creating a craft that included other skills as well.
Keeping this in mind, I designed "A-peel-ing Apples" so children could practice cutting in a circle. This is a wonderful opportunity to add the term spiral to students' vocabulary as well. Giving a red, yellow or lime green color choice for the apple, also reinforces that science fact.
To add a bit more pizzazz, older students can glue two different colors together. The thicker paper lessens the drop of the spiral, and the double-sided colors add interest to the dangler. Students glue a stem and leaf to the top. Punch a hole; add a yarn loop and suspend from the ceiling, or as a border against a hallway wall. Cutting on a straight line is also not that easy for some little ones. These apple and pumpkin "strip" puzzles, will not only give your students practice with that skill, but review and reinforce sequencing numbers from 1-10, skip counting by 10's, or counting backwards from 10-1. I've used a dashed-line font, for the numbers on the apples and pumpkins, so that students can get some writing practice in. Encourage children to count quietly as they trace the numbers.
Simply choose a number concept you want to work on and run off the puzzles on construction paper. Children choose a puzzle; trace the numbers; cut the strips, lay them in the proper sequence on a sheet of black construction paper, and then glue them down.
Remind students to keep a small space between the strips. Students add a stem and leaf to the top. You can make the pumpkin more of a keepsake, by having children, or a room helper, trace their hand, with their fingers spread, onto green construction paper. They trim and glue next to their stem. Completed projects make a sweet harvest bulletin board.
You may want to laminate one of each kind, to keep in your math center. Each puzzle has its own Baggie. Children can work indepently, or pick a partner to play "Speed" against. 1-2-3 Come Study Antonyms and Synonyms With Me!
Since vocabulary building is such a huge part of learning to read and write, I try to think of interesting ways to do that. Puzzles and games always grab students' attention, so I thought I'd design some with an apple theme for September, and because of the many requests for antonym and synonym activities, I decided to incorporate those.
Run off on red, yellow and green construction paper; laminate and trim the 66 antonym apples to make puzzles. Use them for games too, such as Memory Match or toss them in a basket and have students choose several to play "I Have; Who Has?" The apples provide 132 words to help build student vocabularies. A blank apple template is also included.
Be sure and check out my list of 290 antonyms + a cover so students can make their own antonym word booklets.
I've also included 80 synonym leaves with 2 blank leaf templates. Run off on green construction paper, laminate and trim. Encourage students to write in synonyms of their own.

1-2-3 Come Make An Apple Puzzle With Me!
A quick, easy and fun way to get your kiddo’s sequencing numbers is via a number puzzle, which is also great for fine motor and higher level-thinking practice. One of my Y5 report card standards was to be able to put a puzzle together, so this was especially beneficial.
Here's How You Make A Puzzle: Choose either apple puzzles with number strips from 1-10, for younger students, or skip counting apple puzzles, with number strips that count by 10's to 100. Print off the apple puzzles on white construction paper or card stock, laminate and cut out the individual numbered strips.
Keep each puzzle in its own Ziplock Baggie. Pass the Baggies out to your students and set a timer. Challenge them to complete their puzzle before the timer rings. You can also partner students up, who have the same puzzle, so they can play "Speed" against each other, to see who can put their puzzle together the quickest.
When students are done with one, they may exchange theirs with another child who has a different puzzle. You can use these each year, or skip the lamination and give each child a puzzle to take home. They can cut their own strips, mess them up and put them together.
Another thing you can do with the puzzles, is make a puzzle flip book. I used 4 apple puzzles for my booklet. Print the puzzles and cut out the strips. Each puzzle should have a pile of strips 1-10. Lay the number strips for each puzzle on top of each other, so that the number one strip is at the top. Now make piles of all of the number ONE pieces, then a pile of the number TWO pieces etc.
Arrange the pieces so that when you make your flip book, the pages will show a mixed up puzzle. (See photo.) Glue just the number portion of each strip, to the top of the 1-10 puzzle template. Children flip the pages, to find the matching pieces, to complete each puzzle.
