I’ve tried very hard to include a variety of materials suitable for PK-2nd, so you can diversify for the various skill levels of your students; helping the strugglers, while challenging others.

Pete the cat activities, pete the cat craftsSimply choose which activities are appropriate for your students, then “print & go!”  For PK kiddos do the activities as a whole group.

Use the packet for morning work, table top lessons, centers, early finishers, homework or a sub tub

As a back to school special, this packet is on sale for just $8. That's $3 off.  If you'd like to purchase it, please send me an e-mail at dianehen@teachwithme.com as the packet is not available in my TpT shop. (Just click this LINK and my e-mail request will pop up.)

Finally, Pete's "I Love My White Shoes" is also great for teaching and practicing "how to sequence and retell a story", since this packet was already huge, I decided to make the Pete's Story Telling Slider a separate item.  This too, is not available in my TpT shop. If you'd like to purchase it for $2.50 click the LINK to let me know.

pete the cat activities, pete the cat crafts, pete the cat games, vocabulary building activities, dolch word activities, I love my white shoes activities, rockin' in my school shoes activities, back to school activitiesThere are several slider options:
* Check comprehension by having older students color, cut and glue the pictures in the correct sequential order on their slider.

* For PK kiddos the picture "cards" are in the correct order, or skip the cutting and gluing steps and have little ones simply color the slider with the pictures already on the strip.

Besides the water graphic option, there's also a slider with a picture of bucket.

I’ve also included a full-color copy so that you can quickly and easily make a teacher’s sample to share with your students, helping to explain what you want them to do.

As children pull on the end of the “slider” the various pictures go through Pete’s “neck window”, so that students can take turns retelling the story to a partner or reading buddy, then take Pete home to share with their family, once again practicing these standards.

I’ve also included a color as well as BW “Here’s What Happened…” writing prompt worksheet, as another way to check comprehension, plus practice sequential writing.

This one's sure to become a keepsake as I’ve included a heart pattern that says: “This is the hand you used to hold when I was only _______ years old.”

Children write in their age, trim and glue it to their hand print paper, which says: “We read ‘I Love My White Shoes.’ Please ask me to tell you the story.”

The head is glued to the top of their (traced then cut out) blue hand, with their thumb being the "tail".

The colorful shoes glued to the cat's "legs" (their fingers), will help them sequence the story in the correct order.

It's another rainy morning, but I'm glad for the respite from the super-hot and humid days all week long.  Wishing you a refreshing day.

Tag! You're it; now you make a word picture! I am over the moon excited over Tagxedo! It’s a website that turns words, famous speeches, poems, quotes, etc. into a VISUALLY stunning word cloud picture!

The possibility of ideas is endless.  Here are a few that I dreamed up for up-coming spring activities:

Brainstorm a list of words with students; write them on the board; students choose the ones appropriate for them and type them in.

These are three that I made for Mother’s Day. You can use mine, or have students describe their mom and make their own.  Click on the link to view/download the Mother’s Day word pictures.

Different fonts, colors and shapes are available to choose from, so each child will come up with a unique keepsake for their mommy.

Students make a word picture about themselves entitled “ME”.

I chose the handprint shape for mine, but they could choose whatever shape that represents them, such as a shape from their favorite sport, a ballerina, their age, their initial etc.

Teacher's could also make a "High Fives!" word art picture for each one of their students as a card for preschool or kindergarten graduation, or as a certificate for going into the next grade.

I've also made, "Look Who's Leaping Into ______ Grade!" filled with fun words associated with the school year. There's also a matching bookmark or slap bracket to go along with the certificates.

How perfect to use word art, when studying these men. Have students plug in a speech, or adjectives they feel describe them.

What a wonderful vocabulary builder and great independent computer center to practice keyboarding skills!  It’s also a fun way for students to illustrate a poem or short story that they wrote!

I’m always looking for different ways for students to use Dolch and CVC words, so I typed in the various lists of Dolch and CVC words to make cute anchor charts. I made a header that says:  How many words can you spy?

Students LOVE  “I Spy” and “Where’s Waldo?” books, so this is yet another way to immerse children in word work in a fun way. Run off copies of the various word pictures and have students “spy” the words in the collage.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Fun Wind-Themed Activities With Me

Incorporating a variety of genre is one of our standards.  It's difficult to cover separate units for all that's required, so I offer a variety of genres within each of my monthly-themed units.

I love poetry, particularly poems that rhyme, but finding age-level appropriate ones that match a theme, is not an easy task.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesSince March is a very windy month here in the Midwest, I have a brief, wind-themed mini unit, that I toss in on the tail end of our kite unit. (No pun intended!)

With that in mind, I designed the Wind Tricks poetry packet to go along with my other wind-themed activities.  I hope you find it helpful.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesI came across this poem years ago, and even with the help of massive search engines, I still have not discovered the author.

I chose this poem because it's short, simple, incorporates rhyme and more than half the words that are in the poem, also appear on the Dolch word lists.

The packet includes:

An anchor-chart Wind Tricks poster-poem. Hang it up and read it to your class, then read as a whole group.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesSix large (full-color) pocket chart cards, featuring each stanza.  Use these for a whole group activity as well.

Using dry erase markers, call on children to correct beginning capitalization and add end punctuation.

I've also included a small set of matching pocket chart cards which fit on one page.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesSo that students can read and correct their own poem, I made a black and white "emergent reader" set of cards, which they can color, trim and collate into a booklet.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesThe packet also has 2 sizes of 34-mini word cards, using the words from the poem. (18 are Dolch Words.)

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesOne of the ways you can use them is with the Mr. Windy envelope.

Pass the mini word cards out to students and then have them "feed" the Mr. Windy "Blow some words my way" envelope or use them to play the Windy Words game.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesThe Windy Words game is a bit goofy, but I'll try just about anything to get my kiddos excited about reading and writing.

No matter what grade I taught, from PK through college, my students always enjoyed my silly, but educational games.

Children make their own "Windy" by poking a straw through Mr. Windy's mouth.  I used a red strip of paper and taped it to the table.

Adjust the game to suit the age of your students. Toss the word cards on the table, or leave them in a pile.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesWho can blow the most words across the line? Can they read all of the words that they blew over the line? Have them choose 3-5 words and use them to make up sentences.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesAs a math extension, have each student count and then record on the “Tally Ho” sheet, how many words they blew across the line.

Use tally marks then add up a grand total of how many words the entire class blew over the line. (Recording data, using tally marks, as well as skip counting by 5s are all practiced.)

There are other uses for the cards too. Put them in alphabetical order; sort them by long and short vowels; or sort them by parts of speech.

If you have the time, and don't mind a messy, but awesome craftivity, reuse the Windy Word straws to make a "Windblown" Hair-Raising Portrait.

straw blowing portrait painting, blowing paint with straws to make a pictureI found this adorable picture on Pinterest, with a broken link, but it's exactly what I had in mind.  For easy clean up, lay newspaper on your worktable and use a cardboard box as a "security wall" to catch splatters.

windblown hair template, straw blowing portrait painting, blowing paint with straws to make a pictureStudents can draw their own face on a sheet of white construction paper, or run off my template. Children add facial features and color their "head".

To make a "bad hair day doo" arrange a rainbow of colored plops of paint around the top of the head. (I use watered-down acrylics, because they are inexpensive, washable, and fast drying.)

Children use their straw to gently blow the paint in an upward direction to make "strands" of "hair".

Set aside to dry and later have children mount their creation on the top of the writing prompt: "I'm having a bad hair day when..." or something to do with wind or the Wind Tricks poem.  They could also write the poem on the back or whatever words you want them to work on.

child blowing paintAnna, over at the Imagination Tree did some cool abstract straw blown paintings with her girls.  For more "straw art" click on the link for a very pinteresting board I discovered while doing research.

wind activities, wind poem, words that rhyme with play, words that rhyme with dance, words that rhyme with feet, word games, tally mark activities, wind tricks poem, emergent wind reader, poetry genre, poems for young kids, end punctuation activities, beginning capitalization activitiesSince this is a rhyming poem, I also included some Rhyme Time activities for the words in the poem that rhyme with day, street, and dance, which include anchor-chart posters, featuring the alphabetical lists of the words that I thought of.

This is a great way to build vocabulary, and fits in nicely with your Daily 5 word work activities.

Finally, I included a "What is Genre?" explanation, with an emphasis on explaining the poetry genre. (Nice for giving your students some background.)

Although he loves drinking with a straw and blowing bubbles, and truly enjoys craftivities with me, I'm not quite ready for a "mess-terpiece" today. Wishing you a delicious day filled with giggles.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Candy Heart Activities With Me

One of the things I do during February, is use NECCO's candy conversation hearts in all sorts of fun activities.  NECCO stands for the New England Confectionary Company. I really enjoy doing research to find out the background of things I use in the classroom, and while working on this blog article, I found some truly interesting information on a candy that's been around since Lincoln's time, when it was popular during the Civil War!

Back then, they were a crisp candy with a paper note tucked inside a cockle shell, much like a fortune cookie.  In 1866 the candy evolved into a heart shape when Daniel Chase, the brother of NECCO’s founder, Oliver Chase, invented the process of printing words on the candies.  They were written in red dye and were an instant success, (particularly as a wedding party favor) becoming known as  "Motto Hearts".

Until I started doing research, I was not aware that each year the company makes up new messages. However, some sentiments like "Kiss Me" and "Be Mine" added in 1902, continue to be favorites. To keep things current, they've invited the public to join an online survey to decide what they want these sweet little messages to say. Recent favorites: "Tweet Me", Text Me", "Love Bug" and "You + Me".

I also learned that they have themes such as food, resulting in "Recipe 4 Love", "Table 4 Two" and “Yum-Yum” messages.  In 2003 they had a “school” theme with the messages: “Teach me” “Let’s read.” “Write me.” and “Whiz Kid” . To see an archive of the sayings from past years click on the link.

According to the National Confectioners Association, “About 8 billion hearts will be produced this year!” The company has to produce 100,000 pounds of hearts a day to meet that demand, as they sell that amount in 6 weeks during their peak Valentine’s Day season.  So how do I use them in the classroom?

Getting To The Core Is A Real Treat And Not All That Tricky With This Cute October Booklet

My Trick Or Treat easy reader, is a fun way to reinforce the Common Core Standards: RF.K1a (Following words from left to right, top to bottom and page by page.) RF.K1c (Understanding that words are separated by spaces in print.) L.K2a (Capitalizing the pronoun I and the 1st word in each sentence.) and L.K2b (Being able to recognize and include ending punctuation.)

Simply review these standards with your students and point them out as you explain the booklet.

Students read, trace and write the sentence.  On the first page they illustrate what they will be for Halloween.

When choosing sight words, I incorporated many words from the Dolch word lists when I wrote this easy reader booklet. This covers the Common Core State Standard: RF. K3c

I've also included a page of manipulatives for you to laminate and use Velcro or magnet strip so that the booklet can become an interactive read aloud that you can later sequence with your students.

To incorporate math, tally your students' favorite Halloween candy and graph the results on the bar graph provided.

Traceable flashcards are also included + a certificate of praise when children can read the booklet independently.

Tag You're It! Now You Make A Picture!

Hurry! Let's Make A Sentence!

A fun thing you can do with Dolch words is to print off my labels and press the stickers on large colored Popsicle sticks.

Simply download my template, put a sheet of large Avery (30 on a page) labels in your printer.  (In my HP you put the sheet face down, in my Epson printer it's face up.  Make sure you do a test, so you don't waste labels.) and then click print.

I wanted to use the big labels so that students could easily read them and I could use this cool font by Kevin and Amanda called “Tonight’s The Night. Click on the link to check out their free fonts.

You’ll need to trim the labels down a bit so they fit, but I think it’s worth the effort because they show up nicely.  Press hard so that they will stay put.

Keep the sticks in a cute mug or basket that you can pass around.  Students choose a stick and read their word.  If they can, they stay in the game.  If they can’t, the stick goes back in, and they’re out of the game.

Challenge students to find other children with words that they can team up with to make a phrase or sentence.  See who can make the longest phrase or sentence, using the most words, before the timer goes off.

Students can go to this mug/basket and create sentences and phrases when they are done with other work, or use it as a writing center or Daily 5 activity, and have students choose sticks to make phrases/sentences and then write them on a sheet of paper using correct capitalization and punctuation.

Children enjoy games.  Making things fun for students takes the drudgery out of memorizing things, as one of my little ones said:  “We were having so much fun we didn’t even know we were learning!”

I truly believe that learning and fun should go together.  If children enjoy learning they will WANT to come to school and you won’t have problems with discipline because students will be engaged in learning because they aren’t bored.

The Traceable Dolch Word Card packets  provide a tip list of a variety of activities you can incorporate into centers and games for students so they can immerse themselves with these words.

If you get students looking for, and using the words they will learn them.

I've discovered that looking at the words separately and trying to figure them out, is difficult for some students. Memorization is also very boring.

We teach students all sorts of attack skills when they read, yet we give them a “list” of Dolch words and hope for success.

I find that some children do so much better if they can see these words in a group.  So I’ve made up phrases using the words.

These can be found in My Read, Trace & Write Dolch Word Phrase Packets.   They include trace and write the phrase-skill sheets, 40-60 phrase cards, a letter home to parents, 3 recording “good reader” sheets, and 2 certificates of praise.  These make great Daily 5 activities.

It’s important to get parents on board to reinforce lessons at home to get struggling children over the hump as there is just not enough time for all the one-on-one needed at school.

When a student achieves success with one packet they can correct the phrases and turn them into sentences by adding capital letters, punctuation and a word or two to complete the thought.   Continue to raise the bar, and challenge students to move on to the next level of words.

Finally, I really think that teaching students the words phonetically helps a lot.  I’ve had wonderful success turning the light bulb on when some students just don’t get it when I rhyme things.

Activities For Dolch Words

Looking for something different to do with Dolch Words?  Look no farther!

I’ve made traceable word cards for Pre-Primer through 3rd, that you can turn into an Itty Bitty booklet.

Students enjoy tracing the words, cutting out the cards and sequencing them in alphabetical order, adding a cover and turning them into a mini booklet that’s fun to share with their families.

You can use these cards for Memory Match “Concentration” games, “I Have Who Has?” games or sprinkle them on the floor and have students find and then sequence them as a whole group.

Students can choose a partner and play “Speed” and several other card games too.

I've also included a set of bomb cards so students can play "Kaboom" as well.  Directions for these games are in the tip sheet.

There are also worksheets where students trace and alphabetize the words as well.

These things make nice Daily 5 activities too.
